Application Process

The Library gives applicants the opportunity to register their Cradle to Cradle inspired elements in building developments and display them to a broader audience. The corresponding application process follows a defined procedure:

Application date and required information

The application should be submitted as soon as the design phase of the building is completed and will subsequently be examined by the Hamburger Umweltinstitut (HUI). The information, which is required for the application process, can be looked up here.

Role of the Hamburger Umweltinstitut

The Hamburger Umweltinstitut will evaluate the application based on the given data and inform the applicant about its decision. Once the construction of the building is finished, the HUI will audit the building (by performing a site visit) and investigate whether the stated Cradle to Cradle elements in the application process have been implemented. Only if the audit is successful, the building elements will be published in The Library.
Note: Within the application process the Hamburger Umweltinstitut will invoice administration, audit and travel costs

The HUI is working as a team of enthusiastic experts, supporting the Cradle to Cradle design concept and its philosophy. Due to the organisational structure, it is not possible to guarantee any exact deadlines and longer waiting times can occur. However, the HUI is keen to honour any achievements towards Cradle to Cradle elements for building developments and no project will be neglected.

The costs charged by the HUI are calculated on the basis of the actual costs incurred and the actual expenditure. This depends in particular on the scope and quality of the documents submitted and, of course, on the respective size of the project and the project duration.

Appropriate communication is indispensable for a successful cooperation. For this, please take a look at the document with instructions for external communication, which can be found under Support.

The Hamburger Umweltinstitut – Zentrum für soziale und ökologische Technik e.V. (Hamburg Environmental Institute – Centre for Social and Ecological Technology) is an independent, non-profit association recognised as particularly worthy of support for the scientific treatment of environmental issues.
